Opal is a personal, non-commercial student project. It isn't a company and this isn't a legal document written by a lawyer. This is a plain explanation of what data Opal touches and where it goes.
What Opal collects
When you create an account, Opal stores your name and email through Firebase Authentication if you sign up with Google. Whatever basic profile info Google shares during that process (name, email, profile picture) is all that is saved. During setup, Opal also stores your school, major, and academic year.
Any opportunity you manually add (company, role, dates, notes, and so on) is stored under your account. If you turn on desktop alerts, Opal also saves a device token so it can send you a real notification. This token identifies your browser for push delivery, not you personally.
Where your data actually lives
Opal doesn't run its own custom database. Your account and data are stored in Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore, both Google products. Opal's code reads and writes to them through Firestore's Security Rules, which are set up so your data can only ever be read or changed by your own logged-in account, not by other users, and not by anyone browsing the site anonymously.
Suggested opportunities
Once a day, Opal checks SimplifyJobs and Jobright.ai for new internship listings and saves them. Companies come and go from that saved list day to day, as postings open or close on their end. When you open Suggestions, you're shown a random sample from that saved list, narrowed down to your major, so even opening it twice in the same day can show you different companies. Nothing about you gets sent to either site when this happens. Opal can't vouch for how accurate or complete their listings are, think of it as a helpful starting point, not a guarantee.
What's stored locally in your browser
A few small preferences like whether you've seen the homepage view counter before and whether you've turned alerts on or off are stored directly in your browser's local storage. This stays on your device and isn't sent to Opal's database.
What Opal does not do
Opal does not sell your data, does not share it with advertisers, and does not run third-party ad trackers. There's no monetization here. This project exists solely to serve myself as a tool and to others.
What is next for Opal
Opal's updates are directly from user feedback or what I feel would be good. My goal is to make opportunity tracking simple and as automated as it can be. I do plan to potentially have an app built for iOS/Android and a dark mode options. If you have any suggestions or feedback, please reach out to me directly.
Questions
If anything here is unclear or you want your account and data removed entirely, reach out directly and it'll be handled personally. My email is addritaside@gmail.com.
